Prologue: I have only a high school education.
This is a neck lace My Sweet Rib gave up some time ago and The Purging Lutheran is fairly certain I know the reason why. It’s a pretty hefty feller and I can believe she would struggle standing up straight and walking in a straight line. You get one of these babies swinging left and right and ol’ Mr. Physics’ll have her walking like she’s walking home from a college-days night out with the girls. Just in case you forgot what it’s all about, here is a definition of the ‘p’ word.
Physics is the branch of science that deals with the structure of matter and how the fundamental constituents of the universe interact.
Here is a picture of what physics looks like.
It’s an immutable law meaning unchanging over time or unable to be changed. God invented it as a ‘bumper’ so the universe can operate in a stable manner. Used properly we can create ways to improve our lives. Want to get from here to there faster? Easy. Create a car which can go faster. A problem, besides poor driving skills, is the inability to make breaks strong enough to counteract its speed. Or constructing roads able to accommodate the car’s abilities. In essence, humans (replete with pride) find ways to muck it all up. We are always trying to find ways to overextend our boundaries at least as we know them. People like my brother, Rob, and Uncle Marty understand physics and treat it with respect – for the most part. Don’t get me started on Rob’s ability to scare the dickens out of me when we’re tooling around in his automobile. Yoips!
We’ve (well, not me) managed to use atoms to create sources of power to light our cities but also bombs which can destroy those well-lit cities. We understand the properties which can lift a plane in the air yet we make mistakes making them that can bring them down. God designed birds. How many times do you see a bird crash into the ground due to design flaw?
Jesus certainly understood what physics is/was. He created it. How else could He walk on water unless He understood ‘surface tension’? Frankly, I believe in miracles but I’m a fan of explaining fantastical happenings with as much proper science as possible. Things like the Red Sea parting, water into a potent potable, ax heads floating on the water, I believe, if they haven’t been figured out yet could be figured out given enough time and study. Just because we don’t know how something occurred now doesn’t mean we might not know later. And this isn’t to say we are denying God His sovereignty over Creation but only that we haven’t caught up to Him* as to how He does it. Healing withered hands? Beats me. Eyesight from mud and spittle? Who can tell? A building topples over and someone survives? I’m OK with angels helping out to provide assistance. God has angels, why not use them? Satan uses his fallen-associates to help him spread misery. It’s hard to find a Christian who doesn’t believe that.
You know what? I think this is all. We will figure it out soon enough.
* and can’t even if the only reason is sin – although it seems like they might have gotten in His neighborhood with The Tower of Babel
Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
5 Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
6 On what were its bases sunk,
or who laid its cornerstone,
7 when the morning stars sang together
and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8 “Or who shut in the sea with doors
when it burst out from the womb,
9 when I made clouds its garment
and thick darkness its swaddling band,
10 and prescribed limits for it
and set bars and doors,
11 and said, ‘Thus far shall you come, and no farther,
and here shall your proud waves be stayed’?
12 “Have you commanded the morning since your days began,
and caused the dawn to know its place,
13 that it might take hold of the skirts of the earth,
and the wicked be shaken out of it?
14 It is changed like clay under the seal,
and its features stand out like a garment.
15 From the wicked their light is withheld,
and their uplifted arm is broken.
16 “Have you entered into the springs of the sea,
or walked in the recesses of the deep?
17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you,
or have you seen the gates of deep darkness?
18 Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth?
Declare, if you know all this.
19 “Where is the way to the dwelling of light,
and where is the place of darkness,
20 that you may take it to its territory
and that you may discern the paths to its home?
21 You know, for you were born then,
and the number of your days is great!
22 “Have you entered the storehouses of the snow,
or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,
23 which I have reserved for the time of trouble,
for the day of battle and war?
24 What is the way to the place where the light is distributed,
or where the east wind is scattered upon the earth?
25 “Who has cleft a channel for the torrents of rain
and a way for the thunderbolt,
26 to bring rain on a land where no man is,
on the desert in which there is no man,
27 to satisfy the waste and desolate land,
and to make the ground sprout with grass?
28 “Has the rain a father,
or who has begotten the drops of dew?
29 From whose womb did the ice come forth,
and who has given birth to the frost of heaven?
30 The waters become hard like stone,
and the face of the deep is frozen.
