The continuing story of Jack-o’-Lutheran 10-31-18 …

…  where Jack adopts the guise of a man in a hospital gown undergoing tests. I found my Halloween outfit at Angie’s Balloons, Bandages and Morgue, a medical supplies party store. I was surprised to find this IV patch sitting right there in the discount bin in the pulse aisle at billing. My ‘pitch‘ this evening is for me to cry aloud, “O, woe is me, the end is nigh!” after which My Sweet Rib, dressed as Clara Barton, hands me my test results. I crumple the paper, raise my fist to the air and declare,

This is my hand. I can turn it. The blood is still running in it. The sun is still in the sky and the wind is blowing. And I… I, Antonius Block, play chess with Death. And I whooped its butt!“*

Rinse and repeat.

My identification band isn’t just a medical & legal nicety but if somehow I am found off to the side of the road or sitting on a park bench for no apparent reason, my finder can put me in a USPS mailbox, they’ll scan the bar code, find my address and our insurance will pay the freight to have me delivered to my home.

Psalm 46 1-11

God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
    and the mountains quake with their surging.[c]

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
    God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
    he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Come and see what the Lord has done,
    the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease
    to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
    he burns the shields[d] with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth.”

11 The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.

*Thanks, The Seventh Seal, for this quote … well, most of it anyway.
