the daily purge 7-18-16


Today is the dead center of summer. It’s ‘heat wave’ week in the USA. Temperatures will climb past the 90°s by Wednesday and lay their hooks into the atmosphere for the rest of the week. If you are fortunate you have access to a lake, river, creek, ocean, waterfall, retention pond, pool, Slip’n’Slide, water pistols, hoses, sprinklers, rain clouds, reservoir, water balloon, bath tub, conditioned air in your car, work or home, ice cubes, refrigerated drinks, a cabana boy waving a palm frond over you in your thatch hut, or maybe even a good friend giving you the cold shoulder.

Otherwise you’re stuck, probably in the flatlands of Central Indiana, with a bucket of chalk and a toy shovel. The Purging Lutheran isn’t quite sure why I even have a bucket of chalk and a toy shovel. My Sweet Rib and I have indoor plumbing with both kinds of water, heated and unheated. The Lad never did and Our Marta is past the stage of making chalk drawings on the sidewalk. Her chalk drawing antics mostly included big hearts with the names, Mindy, Laura, and Allie in them. Or if it was a joint effort, it was a picture of The Spice Girls (Baby, Ginger, Posh, Scary, Sporty). If Allie wanted to poke fun at Our Marta, she’d draw a heart with “Marta Loves (fill in the name of some icky boy)” in the middle. I’m guessing the toy shovel was for her to chase Allie around the yard with while yelling, “I do not!!”.

Psalm 127:3-5   Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.
